CT Adult Volleyball

In my 3+ years living in Connecticut, I have had a great deal of difficulty finding opportunities to play. 18+ leagues and open gyms are scattered across the state, and often times are difficult to join because of a lack of available information.  I will use this post as an ongoing listing of available adult opportunities in CT -- split among Open-Gyms, Tournaments and Leagues.

If you have additional information on any of the following Open-Gyms and Leagues, or if you know of any other opportunities to play, please leave a comment, send me an e-mail, or respond to @volleynut on Twitter.

*Disclaimer* Please double check either by web or by phone with each of the venues/town recreation departments on the times and schedules. Some of these may have changed since I last checked.

  1. Glastonbury Coed Open-Gym is 1 court, nice gym, high ceilings, with almost no obstructions. Good in-floor net, Mens’ height, but no antenna. Level of play is C, maybe B- depending on the people. Games are rally to 25, switch sides, switch players every other game, middle front sets in rotation, usually 3 hits per side. Nice, friendly crew. Residents are $3 drop-in or $29 for a yearly pass. Non-residents are $55 for yearly pass, no drop-ins (although they don’t ID, so just pay $3). Session ends April 27, 2010.

  2. We play outdoor grass volleyball at Cranbury Park, Norwalk, CT. We play doubles mens and reverse coed. We just ask that people know how to play to come out and play with us. We are easy going and usually play Tuesdays and Thursdays after work. I have an email group where I organize play.

    • Hi Tony, I just saw your post. Im from Wilton and have been playing open volleyball at LA Fitness in Norwalk on Wednesday nights. You guys play reverse coed at Calf Pasture? I am not very experienced at beach but I would be more willing to play reverse coed than attempt to play on a mens net.

Can anyone show up and be able to play? Or do you need to come with a team?
      Thanks for the Info!!!

      • Hi Jen,
I am sorry but I wasn’t aware of this website/post. I organize grass doubles outdoors during the warmer months with play at Cranbury Park in Norwalk, CT. Send me your email and I will add you to my email list so you will know when we are planning in playing. Usually if I get at least 2 girls I set up to play reverse-coed. We won’t play again until it gets warm outside with some grass on the ground.

    • Hey Tony -

I just read your post and would love to play some volleyball again. What time do you typically play and do you still play at Cranbury Park?

      • Hi Matt,
Send me an email and I will add you to my volleyball email list so you will see when we are playing. We won’t start again until the weather is warmer and some grass.
        Tony

    • Hello Tony,

where do you guys play..im interested. thanks

      • Hi Tim,
We playing in the warmer months at Cranbury Park in Norwalk, CT. Send me your email and I will add you to my email list so you can get updates to when we are playing.
        Tony

  3. Hey, thanks for the info. I’m in Hartford and I think I will check out the YMCA open games in town. I have never played organized volleyball, but love the sport and played a ton of outdoor volleyball in HS and college. I love the sport and would love to play in a league eventually. Can you tell me anything more about league play? Basically, would it be hard for someone unschooled in the game officially to find a good league to play in?

    • Hi Kevin. The best advice I can give you is to try and see which open gyms are available for you to join. It would be a good idea to give the YMCA’s a call to make sure they are still running their open vb programs before you head over there.

Many of the people who attend open gyms are also just learning the sport as well, it is a good opportunity for you to meet new people and get some help and tips on improving.

Leagues usually have multiple levels of play for different skill levels.

      Best of luck.

  4. Hello everyone,

  5. Hello!

I am looking for an open gym for my dad in the Central CT area he used to play volleyball on several leagues. He wants to start playing again but there aren’t volleyball leagues the way there used to be in Hartford? Any suggestions of any open gyms or leagues?

    • Hi Kristina, there are a number of co-ed leagues that your dad can look into in the area. For indoor volleyball within the Hartford area, there are leagues in Manchester (Illing Middle School), South Windsor (Rec Dept), South Windsor (LA Fitness), and Enfield.

For open gyms, many of them are on hiatus as school will be starting soon. You can see the current listing in this post. Unfortunately I do not have links for the Manchester or LA Fitness leagues. There is also a co-ed league hosted at the Aircraft Club in East Hartford, but that is only open for UTC employees, retirees, or members of their credit union.

      Best of luck!

  6. Does anyone have the contact info for the Manchester league? Many websites say that they have one but no info about how to join/when they start. Thanks!

    • I am also interested in information about the league in Manchester. I played for 4 years in high school and I recently moved to the area from PA and I would love to play open gym or league.

  7. Does anyone know if there are adult Volleyball leagues in Danbury?

  8. FYI-
Bristol League at Chippens Hill Middle School starts play on November 4, 2010. The phone number is for park and rec is 860-584-6160 which is not listed above.

    Also West Hartford

  9. Fall adult coed leagues starting in Enfield; Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. A & B levels of play. More leagues scheduled to start on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings starting late December. Full teams, partial teams and individuals looking for a team are welcome but must be required levels of play.
May be starting a beginner/recreational instructional/scrimmage league…more details to follow.

  10. If anyone is looking for an indoor court, Enfield Healthtrax now offering volleyball. Hardood floor, high ceilings and nets that can be adjusted for coed, men’s or women’s height. Also uise of locker room facilities right off the court area. No membership to facility is required. Offering leagues, drop in play and court rentals. To get more info, call 860.745.2408. ask for Sandi

  11. Has anyone been to the West Hartford open gyms? I’m interested in trying it out but don’t know which night to go. I’ve played a lot of volleyball, so I don’t want the level to be too low.

    • Monday and Wednesday nights are largely the same level. Probably a few less lower level players on Wednesdays. Wednesday tends to have less players than Mondays. Quality of play varies slightly from week to week depending on who shows up to play each week.

  12. The group playing at West Hartford tonight is listed as “Advanced/Experienced”. I’m a 5’10″ female who played varsity in high school, club volleyball in high school, club ball in undergrad, and some intramural teams…is this for me??

    • Jamie, Monday and Wednesday nights would be a fit for you. However, tonight’s session, 10/11/2010 is cancelled due to Columbus Day. (School is closed.) Please drop by on Wednesday or next week.

      • Oh man! I didn’t get this message until now. I drove up there from New Haven to find no volleyball players…just a janitor taking out the trash… Next week for sure! :-)

  13. Hello I just moved to the Manchester area from PA. I am looking for any place where I can play volleyball. Does anyone have information on the league in Manchester or any where else nearby? Thank you!

    • there is open gym recreational style co-ed Volleyball every monday at the Bolton Center School. This monday (2/14/11) it starts at 8:30PM next monday there will not be any but we will be back 7:30 the following monday! hope to see you there

  14. Hey guys,

Just stumbled across this page. I’m from Central MA, and normally play volleyball on Tuesday nights at a B- or C+ level, but can play more competitively. I’m looking for a place to play near Trumbull, CT, next Tuesday, as I will be on business. Any suggestions?

I’m willing to drive a bit, this seems to be mostly Central CT posters here, but if anyone knows of any pick up down in the southern CT area, I’d appreciate it!

    Thanks!

    • Jon,

Try Woodbridge, the CT Sports Complex, usually decent level of play and they have solid leagues to join… bit pricey in my opinion. But, I mostly play central CT, so not too sure.

  15. Moved up to Simsbury last year, I have played pretty much all over the state and want something local…. short drive. I stumbled on this site and saw Canton up there, which I have never been to. Does anyone have any experience with that open-gym?

    • Canton open gyms on Wednesdays have been discontinued due to lack of attendance. Thursday doubles are generally alright, basically the same core group of players show up each week.

      • Thanks Jliu for the response, I will give it a shot then, some doubles mixed in with 6s on Sundays will prep me for the summer for sure.

  16. I was in a league at CSC in Woodbridge for 6-7 years. Made some great friends there, but it’s out of my price range at the moment. Anyone know of any leagues/open plays/pick up games in the Beacon Falls area that play on Tuesdays and/or Fridays?

  17. Monday night Open Gym Bolton Center School 7:30-10:00

  18. Im interested in finding places to play volleyball level a or b in Fairfield county, drop in play or open gym. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

  19. We are running a co-ed volleyball league on Tuesday nights, 8:30pm & 9:30pm game times. We are located in Canton, Connecticut. Teams can register six to ten players. Teams are guaranteed eight games (8 weeks). Top four teams in the league play in semifinal and championship rounds. This league starts Tuesday, April 12th!

We are a new facility opening April 1st in Canton! We are now taking registrations! Visit our website at http://www.valleysportscenter.com to register online!

  20. Hey guys. I’ll be visiting Stamford for a lil bit in May. The last time I was here I got to play some ball @ LA fitness in Stamford. Is there anywhere else that’s close to Stamford where I would be able to play some volleyball? I’d love to experience some high level of play. Thanks a lot guys

  21. Hey everyone, I’m moving up to New Haven in June and was wondering if anyone knows of any leagues or open gyms near by? Thanks

  22. Courthouse plus fitness center (vernon CT) has Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring volleyball leagues for both members and non members….

    Monday – Competitive
    Tuesday and Friday – Recreational

    http://courthouseplus.com/volleyballc38.php

  23. Valley Sports Center has a Co-ed Volleyball Summer league starting June 14th! We have extended the league to 16 teams maximum because our spring session was such a success!

You can register at valleysportscenter.com or if you have any questions about the league, please email me at lauren@valleysportscenter.com

  24. I was just wondering about the vball at Illing Middle School in Manchester…what are the dates and how do I get in touch with the person running the league?

    • Illing league runs from late fall through spring (think Oct – Apr timeframe.) Working on getting contact info…nothing I’ve found online yet.

  25. Hi! I am looking for a female player to play in the Bob D Intermediate League on Wed nights. If you are interested, please email me and let me know!

  26. Hello All, I just moved to CT and seeking to play in a league in or near Shelton, CT. Any ideas? Josh, where is the Bob D Intermediate play held? I could be interested if location is condusive.

    • Shelton has A and B leagues on Monday (men’s), Tuesday (womens) and Wednesdays (co-ed). Best vb facility that I’ve played on in CT – Shelton Intermediate School. 3 courts with netting in between courts. Call Shelton Parks and Recs dept for more info. Play starts in early November, with practice games for enrolled teams starting week of Oct 24. If you show up for the practices some team may pick you up. The A league I’d label as Intermediate as opposed to Power/Advanced. B leagues are slightly lower level.

  27. hahahhaha yesssssi remember you :)

  28. Hello,
I’m going to be in downtown Hartford for work training for the remainder of July. Originally from the midwest, I have been playing A-level open gyms in Minneapolis for the past year and a half. Are there any open gyms near Hartford over the summer, or is it mostly league play? Thanks!

  29. I’m looking for adult indoor co-ed volleyball for fall/winter season. I live in Norwalk, but work in Purchase, NY on the Greenwich, CT border – so anything in between works. Must be fun, not stuffy and super competitive. I’ve been looking at town pages, but I’m not sure if they are restricted to residents only. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Danielle, I’ve updated the post with some locations in your area. There is open-gym drop-in volleyball in Darien (open to all, registration required), and leagues run out of Greenwich and Stamford (open to residents and employees of businesses in each town.)

  30. Hi everyone. For over 6 years, I have been running a free, fun, and competitive outdoor game whenever the weather is nice. We look for decent to good players with a great personality and attititude. Feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions. You can send me your email or phone number to be added to the email/text list or you can friend me on facebook(Joseph Southland) for updates on there. Feel free to check out the pictures and videos on the website as well, but just keep in mind that we have improved from those earlier videos:)

  31. Hi, looking for any open rec or leagues in southeastern CT on either Sundays or Mondays. Would prefer “B level” or higher, but open to hearing about any. Played some highschool and years of competitive club level volleyball in college (and after). Looking to get back into the game after some time off. Thanks, Kevin

  32. Open gym volleyball in Enfield, CT at Eli Whitney School Gym
    Play is Wednesdays 10/5 – 11/23, cost is $2 for residents and $2.50 non-residents
    Time is 6:00pm – 9:00pm
One court but looking for more players, intermediate/advanced/recreation levels of play

  33. I run an adult coed CLASS in Fairfield through the Continuing Ed Dept on Thursday nights…1 court beginner & 1 court intermediate….we mix everyone up for the last 45 mins to hour so that the beginners can play up…..by that time, the intermediate players have gotten a fairly good workout so it’s more mellow….

    http://fairfield.augusoft.net/index.cfm?method=ClassInfo.ClassInformation&int_class_id=2595&int_category_id=2&int_sub_category_id=10&int_catalog_id=0

this session goes until Dec 15th (Dec 22nd if we lose a night because of bad weather)…

next session starts up again in January

  34. Darien YMCA is way too crowded this season. Open gym session runs on monday’s but there will be 8 teams and its hard for a team to wait 30 mins to play a game. You can hardly play 2 games in 2hrs if you are lucky. Will not recommend to people who are seriuos about playing volleyball.
