Meditation as ADHD Therapy

In the online journal, Current Issues in Education, researchers have published results from a small pilot study on the effects Transcendental Meditation has on children with ADHD. The results have inspired the researchers to desire a larger sample size in order to garner more concrete results.

Maintain Memory with Exercise

Blood Sugar Control Linked To Memory Decline, Study Says

As if there already weren't enough good reasons to get off your fat ass and exercise...

A recent study was published in December in the Annals of Neurology, conducted by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center and funded partly by the National Institute on Aging. The researchers found that "Spikes in blood sugar can take a toll on memory by affecting the dentate gyrus, an area of the brain within the hippocampus that helps form memories. Researchers said the effects can be seen even when levels of blood sugar, or glucose, are only moderately elevated, a finding that may help explain normal age-related cognitive decline, since glucose regulation worsens with age."

Since glucose regulation is improved with physical activity, there is a simple behavioral recommendation to curb the affects of aging and mental degeneration -- physical exercise.

Motivation

...or a lack thereof

If I'm guilty of anything it's of inconsistent motivation. Whether it comes to keeping up with this site, with work, with training or any other aspect of my life I have always had issues with motivation. Through all the years of my life I have had trouble following through and keeping up with the tasks I have set in front of myself. This is an affliction that I believe most of the world's population deals with in at least one aspect of their life.

"New Years"

I don't get why people think "New Years" is such a big deal.

It's not really a fresh start.
It's not really a big change in your life.
It's just a change in numbers.

Your life continues on the same path as it already was unless you as an individual are pro-active in making changes. I guess that's why people make "resolutions" for "New Years". But what is the point? Just because its a so-called holiday you finally have the resolve to change something in your life for the better?

Blame

The mirror doesn't lie

Are you fat? Guess who's fault that is.

Don't have that 6-pack you want? Guess why.

After this holiday season, I just can't take it. BLAME YOURSELF. No one else.

"Everything you do in life, I don't care, good or bad--don't blame God, don't blame the devil, don't blame me, blame you. You control everything! The thoughts you think, the words you utter, the foods you eat, the exercise you do. Everything is controlled by you."
- Jack Lalanne.

Here are some excuses I have heard that make me laugh:

Strength to Weight

Maximizing the Ratio

An athlete's strength to weight ratio is one of his most important physical attributes. Remember, that strength does not just mean slow strength, but explosive strength (other wise known as power). Many guys are afraid of weighing to little. They want to be bigger and stronger. Well, being lighter and stronger is actually a better solution.

10 Rules of Training

Rules for Training, and for Life.

I'm going to have to apologize ahead of time, as this article is going to make me sound a lot like kdeligia, but when it comes to this subject there are definite rights and wrongs that can't go over-stated. This comes out of my own personal experience as an athlete, personal philosophy developed as a volleyball coach, articles I've read online, and advice given from friends.

Intensity

A must have for fitness

Hard work is different from intensity. Many people mistake the two. A much bigger issue is people mistaking doing work for working hard. They think "I am in the gym, so I am working hard". There is a tremendous difference between being in the gym and working hard. When it is written or read it seems very obvious, but in reality many people cannot distinguish the two.

The Melamine Scare

This is just getting ridiculous...

The first major mention of melamine poisonings came from tainted pet food. Then came the stories of milk/baby formula which blew the story up. Now tainted eggs from Hong Kong?
